(Short story, December 2016)
"Imagine the biggest landfill site of all time", Peter asked Colin. "Estrutural in Brazil, 136 hectares? Duquesa in Dominican Republic, 128 hectares? You're thinking quite small so let me help you."
"I wasn't even thinking but go ahead", Colin sighed.
"Human mind, infinite hectares of the filthiest waste you could think of", Peter said with a dramatic tone to his voice that quickly vanished as Colin didn't seem the least bit impressed.
"Her favorite insult was to call me narrow-minded", Pether said as he lighted up a cigarette, "Well honey, just look at this endless dump site of forgotten apologies, thank yous I never said out loud and I love you too's you're probably still waiting to hear."
"And this is something you're proud of?" Colin interrupted him.
"I have my reasons to keep it all to myself. If you say it too much, it loses its meaning. I don't want my words to suffer inflation. I mean look at Nazi Germany; super inflation can be a dangerous thing."
Colin's slightly raised eyebrows and incredulous chuckle were like gas to Peter's inner flames.
"Bet you didn't expect me to play the Nazi card this quickly, did you? Well buckle up Colin, because I'm about to widen your very own landfill to match the size of mine with my 4 AM Scotch induced and slightly self-hatred fuelled word vomit extravaganza."
"I get it, you're drunk. Can I please take you home already?"
"That's an interesting concept, don't you think? Home. It never really feels like you had one ever since you left the first one."
Peter looked around and the world was spinning. They say you can always find someone to agree with you at a pub but Colin was doing a lousy job. Break-ups should give one a free pass to behave like a needy asshole for at least a month and it had only been three and a half weeks since the quite predictable event that practically made poor Colin Peter's new guardian. Besides, getting drunk was just Peter's way of speeding the process as alcohol has the potential to dissolve some of that problem waste called memories. One can really feel like a rockstar thrashing the dear memories like an expensive hotel room. What a better way to not admit that you did something wrong and see the past relationship as something to learn from.
"I don't want to go home. I want to get out of this trash bin they keep throwing me time after time again", Peter writhed himself out of Colin's firm grip.
"You kind of keep jumping there yourself--", Colin started.
"When you're dumped, you really start to wonder if you're in a landfill site. That's were things are eventually dumped, right?"
"I guess."
"Landfills of humans. They're like nursing homes. Last stop. Thank you for the ride. Enjoy your rotting", Peter concluded with a self-deprecating laughter.
When you grow out of Disney movies you decide that there are no happy endings; only happy starts. That's what happened to Peter at least. Ever since his first break-up in 1963 he has been trying to get back to the start. The problem with break-ups is that everything is behind you now and you're left with bittersweet memories that feel like leftover building blocks without counterparts. The happiest years seem to be the teenage years when you have everything in front of you, at least theoretically. Parents and teachers lie to you that you can be anything, and Peter still kind of hanged on to that thought like the last kid to believe in Santa Claus. Of course the right thing to do would be to face the harsh reality without Santa or omnipotence, but at 64 avoidance had become somewhat of a lifestyle for Peter.
The problem with keeping lies like that alive is that reality constantly keeps shattering them. Another failed romance? It doesn't mean that you weren't Prince Charming, just that she was Ursula instead of Ariel. Got fired again? Well if it's not Trump firing you it doesn't count. After a certain point Peter really got creative with the excuses. However, when he looked into the mirror on his 60th birthday and it became increasingly hard to convince himself that he could still be the next teen idol, Peter decided to stop coming up with excuses. Instead he became increasingly obsessed with the idea of burning up all the waste that we call memories that proved him to be anything less than a success story.
Step one was to cover up all mirrors. Step two was to start drinking heavily. Step three was meditation – with emptying your mind and all that jazz. It's cheaper than alcohol if you don't go to the hip and happy, overpayed instructors but to the sad ones who have been on a trip ever since the 60's. Step four was to move to a country where no one knows your name, let alone history. Peter decided to go to England as English always seemed like an impossible language for him to learn and that accent made learning it a mission even Tom Cruise couldn't accomplish. Not understanding anyone would be the perfect way to avoid unwanted feedback people give you without even asking so Peter though it was like hitting two birds with one stone. Granted, that was a bit of an excessive move but when you're obsessed with a thought you go to crazy lenghts to achieve it.
With the obsession beating inside of him like a second heart Peter eventually managed to create his very own padded cell where nothing hurt and everything was beautiful. Everything was going so well. Peter was drinking every day, living in a dump without mirrors and and repeating the ommmm-syllable like a pro. This is what happiness looked like, or nirvana.
But like in most stories, the snake found its way to the paradise somehow. Blame it on the women with their minds like spider webs where you eventually end up squirming like a fly. This time it was not Eve but Betty who reminded Peter that there is something more challenging than abstaining from alcohol: abstaining from living, that is. "Is this seat free", she asked and the doors to Peter's padded cell were flown open. She just smiled across the table and didn't mind that body language was the only language between them.
Betty floated to him like a cloud blocking the harsh truth that love is a magnet for painful experiences that you just want to bury six feet deep in the landfill of your confused mind.
But maybe it would be different in another language, Peter thought.
After the first encounter Peter was obsessed again, spending every waking moment studying the language and trying to get closer to Betty. Sometimes Peter wanted to undress his skin and show Betty all his love towards her. 'I love you' still sounded like phrase he learned from American movies. He could talk about love in English but he didn't know how to love in English in such a way that the words would feel personal. English wiggled around him like boots three times too big. It reminded him of childhood when he always got his brother's old clothes that were hanging on his skinny body. Slowly Peter learned to sew his feelings as pads inside of the metaphorical boots, hoping that some day they'd fit just perfectly.
Language barrier was an obstacle Peter was determined to overcome and he could already see through the cracks. The grass seemed to grow greener there on the other side as it always does, and the sky spread over it all like the softest blue blanket from his happiest childhood memories. Peter wanted to be part of that world, immerse his pale skin in its vibrant colors. He opened his mouth first thing in the morning and allowed the foreign world stream right in. He bathed in the laughter of the television so long that his skin started to crumble. He studied Betty's face in her bedroom filled with the yellow light of street lamps and felt like a child again. It felt like a chance to start again.
He thanked Betty every day for bringing out the child in him. But he never had the guts to apologize for letting out the man who didn't quite know how to grow up.

"You know what she said to me when she left me?" Peter asked Colin who after three years since the break-up realized that this was the final straw. Despair event horizon. Peter wouldn't recover anymore. They say language is wrapped with culture and for Peter English was full of grudge against Betty and the relationship that made him feel like a failure. Peter didn't really have any pure reasons left to hate Betty from the bottom of his childish heart but even more painful than the first love is the one that was supposed to be the last.
Colin looked at Peter who was a living proof that the hardest part isn't to learn something new, such as becoming fluent in a foreign language or adjusting to the surrounding culture. The hardest part is to unlearn old habits. To figure out how to not think about what eat together in the evening or how not to reach for your phone everytime something funny happens. Or how not to wish for them to emerge behind the next corner to hug you just before you fall down on the cold ground.
"Colin, are you listening to me? Guess what she said, guess", Peter interrupted Colin's inner analysis.
"Gave you the number of the nearest kindergarten?"
"She said that she wanted to live with Peter, not Peter Pan."
"Very clever. Maybe you should really consider the second star to the right and straight on 'til morning", Colin commented monotonously.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"That's where you belong. You and Michael Jackson."
"You say Michael Jackson like it's a bad thing", Peter smirked.
"Peter, listen for once. Betty was spot on. You're a kid trapped in the body of a gruesome man. On my evil moments I'm convinced Betty only stuck up with you because she saw you as the baby she never got. And as for me, well, I always despised the ones who took life too seriously. I can take your tantrums, the attention span of the fruit fly, the bottomless curiosity with endless questions but at the rate you keep drinking yourself into alcohol-related dementia I'm a bit worried I might have to soon change your diapers."
"The best people have kept their inner child alive. Admit it, you feel young in my company. I'm your Holy Grail."
"Inner children can be delightful but it's a total misconception to believe that kids are innocent and pure. They're monsters. Lord of the Flies is not fiction."
Conversations with Peter never seemed to produce any kind of wisdom, only bad jokes Peter made to avoid solving his problems. Colin decided to give Peter a preview of his future and took him to visit his father-in-law one Sunday afternoon. The corridors smelled of Septidin and the nurse escorting them to the room had to excuse them after a minute as there seemed to be some kind of a senior version of UFC going on in the next room.
Colin's father-in-law looked like a weird hairy raisin underneath the covers. Colin's children gathered around his bed and started telling about their days, ignoring the fact that grandfather most likely didn't even recognize them anymore. The smallest one of the kids stood a bit farther away, holding his most precious fortune in his hands. "Look grandfather! Look what Simon made in school!" Colin's wife said excitedly and pushed the smallest brother a bit closer.
Simon hesitated to let go of his self-made airplane and held onto it so tightly you kind of started to wait for him to suddenly turn into a Gollum hissing 'my precioussss'. Under the pressure of his mother he reluctantly gave the airplane for grandfather to see. Grandfather looked at the airplane carefully and turned it around so slowly it almost seemed as if he was thinking about something deeper than where on earth he was and who the hell were all these people. Everybody was holding their breath in excitement and waited for granfather to comment on the quite impressive airplane Simon had made. Grandfather looked at the people surrounding his bed for a second and then just threw the poor little airplane into his mouth like a piece of candy.
Colin's wife rushed to stop him from eating it all but it was already too late. The smallest brother was screaming like a siren and all the nurses emerged to the room to calm everyone down.
"See?" Colin said sharply, "This is how you're going to end up."
"Wow", Peter managed to formulate. Colin felt quite proud of his shock tactics and prepared himself to receive Peter's praise of saving him from ruining his life completely.
"He must be the happiest man on this planet", Peter said in awe.
"What on earth are you talking about?" Colin looked at Peter like grandfather had eaten the last of Peter's brain instead of the airplane.
"Look at him lying there, munching the dreams of that little boy. Nothing seems to bother him."
Three years ago Peter called these nursing homes the landfills of humans. He looked around and still saw all the people as vegetables waiting to be thrown into the biowaste bin. Still, these people seemed to represent the highest state of happiness for Peter: just lying there with no guilt of how they ended up in that state and not minding people looking at them with pity.
Peter felt like he had spent all of his life trying to impress people and always ending up in pubs telling his sob stories to strangers who were too losers themselves to call Peter a failure. Socially acceptable forms of success didn't seem to work for him so maybe the opposite might work."It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied", the quote goes but Peter really started to be convinced it's the other way round. Look where learning a new language got him! Back to the pub. He felt stupid for having tried so many years to be a success story when he could've just been eating little kids' airplanes and not finding a single fuck to give.
And just like that Peter decided to become the pig satisfied. And besides, Peter thought, landfills are like amusement parks when you live your life like a pig. Of course, Peter didn't really think the decision through but that seemed to be the prevalent trend in his life. Peter didn't want to paralyze himself with excessive analysis and end up sharing his bitter tears with the victimized spinsters in the self-help section. As if it was much better to be paralyzed by alcohol and whine with other drunks.
"I'm not going to help you" was Colin's initial reaction to Peter's new master plan.
"Just don't stand in my way is all I'm asking", Peter smiled.
With the same obsessive force as he decided to destroy his past or learn a new language Peter started to work on becoming brain dead. He spend his days watching videos of DIY lobotomy, googling how to get Alzheimer's and sometimes wondering if the goverment was spying on people's browsing history. He studied the causes and risk factors for dementia and did everything the doctor's told you not to do.
Happiness was close. Peter could see it glimmering in the horizon where that big-ass light thing was rising and setting every day. He couldn't remember the name of it anymore, and on bad days that was the only thing making him smile. He could smell it on his sixth floor balcony where he dumped all of his trash because getting out of the apartment was getting too challenging. He could see it burgeoning behind the coffee cups when it became harder and harder to understand Colin's speech.
"You don't know anything of the pains of not being able to remember", Colin tried to convince Peter whose obsession was like ear plugs blocking every warning and opposing opinion away.
"It's only painful for the loved ones", Peter said, "and you know I have none left."
"Peter, don't be a martyr. Only Jesus can pull that off. And what about me?"
"I'm just a kid playing with fire. That's what you've been saying since day one. And despite all your oppositions I know you like the warmth of that fire."
It might be hard to understand why anyone would want to be stripped off of what makes them human. Maybe Peter was one of those peope who would make a way better vegetable than a human. Colin looked at Peter, an eternal child and an old man. Maybe the stages in between just weren't meant for people like Peter who was slowly starting to lose his mischievous spark.
"Let me make you some pancakes", Colin suggested as he saw it the easiest way to soothe a child upset.
"Thank you grandmother", Peter replied and smiled a bit.
Colin mixed the eggs, milk, oil and pancakes mix in a bowl and poured it on the hot pan. As the pancakes were sizzling a warm memory from childhood found its way to Peter through all the bad ones. For a moment Peter started to feel like the past could be something else than a nemesis. The memory filled him up with happy feelings so quickly that some of them found their way to his tearducts. Peter was just about to open his mouth and ask Colin to help him stop this madness, but just as the words were about to come about Peter suddenly swallowed them. His eyes had just noticed the pancake mix packet with a label that said "Betty Crocker".
"There is a condition called hyperthymesia where a person can recall almost every day of their lives in near perfect detail", Peter said in a serious voice instead of confessing to experiencing a happy memory.
"That sounds like a useful skill", Colin commented.
"It's a curse. I watched a video where a hyperthymetic explained how hard it is to attend the present or the future as he is permanently living in the past. They get lost in remembering."
"Are you trying to convince me to erase my memory as well", Colin looked at Peter who seemed genuinely upset by the condition.
"Imagine a life with so many memories. All of your mistakes, failures, break-ups, all of the snide remarks and crushing verdicts in perfect detail. I just don't understand how anyone could live with so much of yesterday's waste on their shoulders when I want to perform a lobotomy on myself just by seeing the name Betty on the side of that stupid Betty Crocker pancake mix packet."
"It's just yesterday's waste, Peter. You're not a hyperthemic and a bad past doesn't have to mean a bad future. After all, tomorrow is another day", Colin tried.
"Not for me, Scarlett O'Hara, not for me."
Peter could always feel another day running underneath the supposedly brand new morning. The past days were always there, running with the newones . Here comes a new winter with the crushing weight of the previous ones. Here comes a new summer that echoes the sorrows of the last year's unbearable heat wave. Here is spring reminding you of all the times your hope melted away with the snow. And autumn brings you back all the melancholy you thought you left behind. Peter hated the way days echoed, repeated themselves like a videotape. He wanted silence, anechoic days that reminded him of nothing.
"Well anyway, these pancakes are awesome. After these the name Betty will always represent heaven to you", Colin tried to rid Peter of the negative connotations.
"They will taste like shame and regret now."
"Well you always feel a little shame and regret after pigging out on something so sinfully good", Colin attempted to joke.
"Guess I've been gobbling down sinful treats my whole life then if those are the feelings associated with that", Colin concluded. "Maybe a little suffering won't hurt then. Give me the pancakes as my last guilty pleasure and then I'll show you how lobotomy is made."
After a certain point you learn to choose your battles. It was obvious that there was a battle going on but Colin was starting to accept that he was merely a victim of collateral damage. Peter was a selfish fool, no doubt, but Colin thought it would be as selfish to force someone who really wanted to go to stay only for the others.
"Let them die happy", Colin mumbled to himself and put on the best of Peter André by Peter's request. Might as well go all in if it's the last night of guilty pleasures.

When you carve your soul out it needs a new place to stay. There were many vacant places to choose from: an empty shell on the beach, a body formerly possessed by demons, an abandoned house that can be occupied by anyone, a coma patient lying on the hospital bed, a drunk at a pub who will go home with anyone, an empty can at a dump site or maybe a prisoner of Azkaban sucked dry by the Dementors.
Many souls try to occupy the body of beauty pageant contestants in the hopes of a better life but, as a surprise to many, those bodies are certainly not empty shells. That inviting smile might make one believe that they will say yes to anything and follow people around like brainless dogs, but Peter discovered those puppy eyes are merely a disguise for ruthless souls to get everything they need.
Peter's soul did try to enter a couple of places but even empty shells know better than to let a self-destructive little kid to inhabit them. Survival instinct is such a strong double lock on the door that Peter eventually decided to stay in his own body that was dumped to a nursing home close by his apartment.
"At the back of my mind I still waited for you to come to your senses", Colin said while feeding Peter some disgusting-looking mash,"I don't believe in escape when it comes to solving things or living life. Not that staying with the problems makes them go away either but eventually you grow so accustomed to them you don't even mind spending your afternoons feeding them mash and talking to yourself in the hopes they might still recognize you."
"You were a kid because you could. There's always a fool like me who won't leave. Escape", Colin shook his head.
Peter could hear Colin's lonely ramblings that made him want to say something sarcastic to cheer Colin up. At Peter's state certain things just are not possible anymore and Peter finally learned that there is a huge difference between not giving a fuck and not being able to give a fuck. Peter had no ability anymore, to give a fuck or enjoy that victorious feeling. He wanted to care but he couldn't.
